What Is Classical Literature?

A few weeks ago, I asked the question, What Is Young Adult, because it’s my favorite genre to read and write. In the comments, Ally R (@scribble_sprite) suggested ‘What is Classical Literature’ as the next step in the ‘What Is’ series, so I enlisted the help of my good friend – and classics aficionado – Mariella Hunt to explain why she loves older novels!

I’ve been called strange by friends when I tell them what my favorite books are. Very rarely will you hear me mention a modern-day book; no, if you want to start me on a fangirlish rant, it’s got to be about classical literature. I’m an old soul who craves writing styles that take me back in time. I want to see how people lived, what the culture was like–I want to hear about it first-hand.

Interview: Mariella Hunt on DISSONANCE

Back in May, I posted a cover reveal for DISSONANCE, the new Young Adult novel from my blogging partner, Mariella Hunt. Mariella and I have since formed a blogging alliance, and you can see our first combined post – a ‘Review War’ about Garth Nix’s SABRIEL, over on her blog.

Recently, I decided to ask Mariella about her experience writing DISSONANCE, which is now available for purchase on Amazon and Nook!

Hi Mariella! Where are you from? Do you still live there?

I live in the Treasure Valley, a beautiful place called Boise where the skies often bless you with vibrant sunsets. In the past I have lived for two months or longer in Lima, Peru. Though also beautiful, it is very different from Boise. There are so many people in Lima that I found it hard to adjust there long-term. I guess I’m too quiet by nature for big cities, but we’ll see where life takes me!

Boise sounds quite peaceful! Tell me about your new novel, DISSONANCE! What inspired you to write it?

The ocean in Lima inspired me! We used to drive by the Costa Verde to get to my grandma’s house, and it gave you a spectacular view of the sea; Peru is a beautiful place. Looking at the waves as they stretched towards me, I thought of mermaids, and started writing a mermaid story. I don’t know how the mermaids turned into Muses; what I published looks nothing like the draft I started writing back then. It just shows how vivid and lifelike a novel can be.

You’ve done extensive social marketing with your novel. What was your experience like?

Confusing. I’m still learning the secrets to getting an audience. So far I’ve had more success on Facebook, having gotten a decent following on there, but I’ve finally gotten into Twitter too (thanks to somebody…)

(I think that somebody was me! I was happy to help out!) Tell me about your new blog! What should visitors expect?

Visitors should expect honesty. When I blog about my life I want you to see me as a person. But you should also expect interviews with authors and guest posts from very interesting people. I always forget to participate in blog tags but hopefully can fix that, as some of them really do look fun.

What are you reading at the moment?

I’m reading THE SELECTION, and I was reading it at the same time as SABRIEL last week…ever the multi-tasker… It’s really funny to see two different writing styles, but I’m enjoying both books!

You’re having a dinner party, and you invited three fictional characters. Who’s coming to dinner?

The Mad Hatter, Peeta Mellark, and Sydney Carton. It could be an exciting party, a confusing one, or a really really depressing one.

What are you favorite three books of all time?

The Phantom of the Opera, The Book Thief, and The Queen of the Tearling. (The Book Thief made me cry as a book AND a movie, imagine that!)

And finally, where can people find you on the internet?

You can find me at my website,, or on twitter as @mariellahunt!

Please do say hi! I love making new friends!

Thanks so much for visiting my blog, Mariella! And for my readers, thank you for coming and reading more about Mariella!

Cover Reveal: DISSONANCE by Mariella Hunt

I’m very excited to be revealing something extraordinarily special today – the cover and synopsis for DISSONANCE, the new independent novel from my good friend and excellent writer, Mariella Hunt!

I’ve been part of her support team for this latest novel, and am proud to be presenting the cover for this fantastic new book!

Look at that amazing cover!

What is DISSONANCE all about? Here’s the official blurb, hot off the press from Mariella herself:

Fifteen-year-old Allie Grant lives crippled by her illness. Though kept in isolation, she’s never alone: A spirit named Song lurks in the silence of her bedroom.

When Song reveals its dark nature on the night of her recital, the show ends in tragedy. Verging on death, Allie’s taken in by an uncle she’s never met.

Julian claims to be a Muse with power over music and answers that’ll heal her. The cure she needs is rare, requiring of him a difficult sacrifice. Allie soon suspects her uncle has a secret that’ll turn her world around.

But with days left to live, she might fade without learning the truth…like the finishing chord of a song.

DISSONANCE will be available soon. Don’t want to miss the release date? You can contact and follow Mariella from her links below:

About the Author:

Mariella Hunt is a writer with a strong love for coffee and guinea pigs. She likes using big words in everyday speech, and keeps journals of quotes from the greats.
Most days you’ll find her on a well-loved armchair, reading–or working on one of her many projects. As she cannot stick to an outline, she rewrites way too much.
